Family Medical Practice hosted the “Stroke & First Aid” Health Talk

  • Family Medical Practice hosted the “Stroke & First Aid” Health Talk at New World Sai Gon.
  • The Health Talk’s purpose was to share knowledge regarding stroke and Hands-only CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and First Aid awareness among participants.

Ho Chi Minh City, March 1, 2024 - Family Medical Practice had the opportunity to host a comprehensive health talk focused on Stroke Awareness and Hands-only CPR from 14:30 to 16:00 at New World Saigon Hotel. The session aimed to educate employees about recognizing the signs of stroke and how to perform Hands-only CPR.

Sharing at the event was Dr. Nguyen Hong Truong, our Emergency Medicine Doctor at Family Medical Practice and a well-known lecturer at Pham Ngoc Thach Medical University. The attendees were New World Saigon Hotel’s staff members who were intrigued to learn more about First Aid preparation.

Call *9999 - Chest Compression - Wait For Help Arrival - Repeat

Family Medical Practice recognizes that Hands-only CPR Training is imperative in a society where most individuals are ill-equipped when it comes to First Aid procedures. Dr. Truong gave an important sharing on how to best prepare during a situation where an immediate Hands-only CPR procedure is required to sustain someone’s life before help arrives.

“The objective is to save the HEARTS and the BRAINS of the people around us, so we can continue living and creating more memories. We only need to be a few seconds late for someone’s life to be gone forever,” Dr. Truong said.

Great instruction videos as well as Training equipment were present to ensure accurate and informative demonstrations for the audience. “After checking for response from the victim, we need to call *9999. Next, we need to perform CPR at 100-120 compressions per minute before help arrives. Do it to the beat of a famous song called Staying Alive by Bee Gees,” Dr Truong added.

Prepare For Any Stroke Situations

Another big focus of the Health Talk revolves around stroke scenarios and how to appropriately deal with them. Many of us don’t even know that one in four people over age 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime, according to the World Stroke Organization in 2022. For the very same reason, it can be inferred that most will be inadequate to deal with scenarios involving a victim experiencing a stroke.

“To detect the symptoms of strokes, we must use the FAST test (Facial drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and Time),” Dr Truong said. “In Vietnam, whenever we see someone is unconscious, we assume that any “shock” or “pain” trigger can help the individual to wake up again. Those are ineffective.” Dr. Truong explained that these methods, passed down from previous generations, have questionable legitimacy and that we need to learn the accurate 8 D's of Stroke Care (detection, dispatch, delivery, door, data, decision, drug/device, and disposition). Dr. Truong emphasizes the urgency for timely treatment for stroke victims as the golden hour for stroke treatment following the onset of symptoms is the first 3 hours.“Time is brain”.

The Health Talk successfully equipped the audience with accurate information and hands-on practice. Family Medical Practice always makes an effort to prepare everybody with the right tools and knowledge to keep themselves and the people around them healthy.
