QDENGA - THE NEW DENGUE VACCINE IS NOW AVAILABLE AT FMP CLINICS!

Qdenga is a newly approved vaccine designed to protect against dengue fever, a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause severe flu-like symptoms and, in some cases, lead to life-threatening complications. The vaccine aims to reduce the incidence and severity of dengue fever in both children and adults.

What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is caused by the dengue virus, which is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected Aedes mosquitoes. It is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, particularly in urban and semi-urban areas. Symptoms include:

- High fever

- Severe headache

- Pain behind the eyes

- Joint and muscle pain

- Nausea and vomiting

- Skin rash

In severe cases, dengue can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which can be fatal.

About the Qdenga vaccine

Qdenga is a tetravalent vaccine, meaning it provides protection against all four serotypes of the dengue virus (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4). It is administered as a two-dose series, with doses given three months apart.

Key benefits of Qdenga

Broad Protection: Effective against all four serotypes of the dengue virus.

Reduced Severity: Decreases the severity of dengue fever in individuals who contract the virus after vaccination.

Preventive Measure: Helps protect communities by reducing the overall transmission of the virus.

Effectiveness of Qdenga

Clinical trials have demonstrated that Qdenga is highly effective in preventing dengue fever: The vaccine has shown an overall efficacy of approximately 80% in preventing symptomatic dengue fever. Qdenga has been shown to reduce the risk of severe dengue by up to 90%.

Who should get the Qdenga Vaccine?

Qdenga is recommended for individuals aged 4 and older who live in or travel to areas where dengue is endemic. It is particularly important for:

- Residents of dengue-prone regions.

- Travelers to tropical and subtropical destinations.

- Individuals with a history of dengue infection (to prevent severe secondary infections).

Safety and side effects

The Qdenga vaccine has undergone extensive testing to ensure its safety. Most side effects are mild and temporary, including:

- Pain or swelling at the injection site

- Fever

- Fatigue

- Headache

- Serious side effects are very rare (e.g. severe allergic reaction, severe pain or swelling, neurological symptoms are extremely rare)

The Qdenga vaccine represents a significant advancement in the fight against dengue fever. By getting vaccinated, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from this potentially severe disease. If you have any questions or need more information, please contact our FMP doctors.
