World Breast Feeding Week

The success of sustaining breastfeeding depends on priming the breast with early and frequent prolactin surges. The current Department of Health recommendation is for women to exclusively breastfeed their babies for six months and to continue breastfeeding alongside appropriate complementary (‘solid’) foods. This means that when we support women, we need to make sure that we give them the information and support they need to achieve this.

Avian flu, also known as "bird flu", refers to a family of flu viruses that mainly affect birds. Two strains of bird flu are known to cause severe and fatal illness in people: H5N1 and H7N9. People generally have no immunity against these viruses.

A COMPLEX AIR EVACUATION REAFFIRMS VIETNAM ON THE WORLD MEDICAL MAP

The medical team of Family Medical Practice Vietnam has added another first to its lengthy list of accomplishments during its more than 20-year history. It recently fulfilled a patient’s family wish of returning him to his home-country by air ambulance on an ECMO machine and dialysis. This is the second time in three years that a complicated mission as this takes place in Vietnam. This achievement has turns FMP into the country’s first medical center able to fly ECMO patients overseas. As of today, only a very limited number of leading hospitals in six countries world-wide have this expertise.

Myopia

In recent years, we have noticed in our clinic an alarming rise in the number of children who suffer from Myopia - “Shortsightedness”. Worldwide, there has been more than 60% increase in children with Myopia over the past 30 years. A large survey done in Taiwan last year reveals that about 20% of first grade and over 60% of sixth grade children need glasses.

Zika Virus

Zika virus is an emerging mosquito-borne virus that was first identified in Uganda in 1947 in rhesus monkeys through a monitoring network of sylvatic yellow fever. It was subsequently identified in humans in 1952 in Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue, similar to the tissue that normally grows inside the uterus, also grows outside of the uterus. The tissue inside the uterus is called "endometrium" and the tissue outside of the uterus is called "endometriosis". [Saigon Times] Emergency Medical Response Center in the offing

The emergency medical response center in HCMC of Family Medical Practice underwent a full simulation of the ProQA software program last week. Currently under development, the center will be in full operation by the end of May. The center will be accessible in both Vietnamese and English via the dedicated number of assistance *9999. Once in place, the center will boast a fleet of international standard ambulances to respond to the emergency needs of patients. It is limited to districts 1,2 and 3 in the initial time.
